I made it down to Nashville each of the last two years and both times I’ve left feeling so inspired by all the talented musicians and creatives that live there. I think I need an annual trip there for my health, but since I’ve been a couple times already (both with my mama in tow who had done her research), I have some tried-and-true recommendations.
If you’re heading to Nashville sometime soon, you’re so lucky! Enjoy this little guide to all the fun you’re about to have in Music City.
What to Do:
- Pinewood Social — You absolutely, 100% should make your way over to Pinewood Social for bowling and yummy food and cocktails all wrapped up in one. Definitely call and reserve a lane (or two depending on how many people you have) before you head to Tennessee. Vintage bowling lanes and craft cocktails are pretty much my favorite combo. Highly recommend!
- Bluebird Café — This place is famous for the incredible artists that have played there while trying to make it (hi, Taylor Swift) and for its role in the show “Nashville.” Songwriters come, usually 3 to 4 each night, and play their own original songs. You definitely need to get tickets for this in advance and expect to eat and drink while you enjoy the talent. Talking is pretty much a no-no, which makes sense because of how intimate and special the little café is. Also, you’re in the right place when you find yourself at a strip mall!
- 12 South — My mom, sister, and I love this little shopping area. There are so many cute shops to hit – don’t miss White’s Mercantile – and trendy coffee shops/lunch spots if you get hungry. Reese Witherspoon’s store Draper James is in this neighborhood and you get a little sweet tea just for coming in to shop—so you have to go. J You’ll also have a great photo op when you find the “I Believe in Nashville” mural here.
- Country Music Hall of Fame — I’m not your average country music fan. I really appreciate it and love some songs, but I’m by no means a diehard. However, I have been to the Country Music Hall of Fame twice and loved it both times. There’s so much heart and history behind country music and it’s really incredible to learn about (and listen to!). Carve out some serious time for this visit, though, because you’ll want to take your time walking through and reading/watching everything. Don’t miss it!
What to Eat + Drink:
- Skull’s Rainbow Room — You can find live music that’s more jazz than country here. It’s moody like a true speakeasy and old-school (been there since 1948). We were walking up Printer’s Alley, by accident, and we stumbled into this absolute gem. Ryan beelined for specialty bourbons and beers, per usual, but I fell in love with the fruity, tropical featured drink called “The Skull.” We took the bartender’s advice and tried the duck empanada and eggplant appetizers. We would highly recommend both of them as we were floored by the savory, wonderful flavor combinations. We’ll get a reservation here next time we go to get a table, but we loved sitting at the bar and enjoying the night there.
- Hattie B’s Hot Chicken — This one is all Ryan. He asked a bunch of people for hot chicken recommendations before going and when we were actually in Nashville and this was by far the most common suggestion. Ryan was in heaven. From my standpoint, I did like chicken and the amazing heat (I’m picky with meat, so this says a lot), but I also thought it was super well-branded and clean! Both important to me. 🙂
- Milk & Honey — Go hungry! This is such a beautifully designed, Instagrammable brunch spot. Order at least one coffee drink if not a handful of them. They’re so pretty and so tasty! The food is also exceptional. 10/10 in our book.
- Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge — This is the most popular and iconic bar on Nashville’s famous Broadway Street and for good reason! We had a blast there multiple nights on our last trip. I like the bottom floor for sitting with a drink and enjoying live music from whichever crazy talented Nashville act is on stage that day/night. If you’re looking to drink, enjoy live music, and DANCE, I recommend the third floor! Room to bust a move and it’s a fun vibe up there.
Where to Stay:
We’ve only ever stayed in Airbnbs, which I highly recommend, but I’d love to stay at a hotel with Ryan next time we go. I’m thinking a hotel near Broadway like the Hermitage Hotel or Hotel Indigo Nashville. If not in that area, it would be so fun to stay at the Gaylord Opryland Resort for a night or two! We’ve visited it and loved walking around the “lobby” (shown below), which is more reminiscent of the Mall of America to me—amazing!
So, tell me. Are you heading to Music City sometime soon? And more importantly, is there room for me in your suitcase?! 😉
P.S. Ryan and I need to get Penny to this great city. There are little bowls of water for dogs in so many shops! What a dog-friendly city. 😍
