The roomie was gone on a work trip for a few days this week and I was reminded again that I hate being away from him! Thank God I had my Penny girl to keep me company. Excited to spend the weekend running all around central Iowa with family and friends! It’ll be a busy one, but one packed full of memories I’m sure.
Here are this week’s five things:
1. The Premier Sale
I can’t remember how many times a year this West Elm, Pottery Barn, Rejuvenation, etc. sale comes around, but every time I see it I waste oodles of time scrolling through items that are still usually a smidge over budget for me. When I saw it going on this morning after posting my roundup of patio sets, I raced over to the sites to check out any great outdoor furniture sales! None were anywhere near the deals I found in my own post, but I did spend some time checking out outdoor accent pillows at both PB and West Elm, which I’d recommend.
2. Home Video Thoughts
In all honesty, I don’t think my parents were big home video people. I did find a few little cassettes while helping my dad clean his home recently, but I’ve never seen any that I didn’t take myself starting in middle school when I got my first digital camera. Today’s world, though, is a completely different ballgame. We carry video cameras with us literally everywhere we go and people are constantly filming. I have been watching a ton of central Iowa kids lately and they are all so darling at their ages right now that I can’t imagine all the footage their parents have of them! Here’s my tip: If you are capturing moments in your life–of kids, of your spouse, of your parents, or your dog–turn your camera horizontally every once in a while. Your phone footage is suddenly upgraded from SnapChat or Insta-worthy to a future mashup of home videos that fits across your entire TV screen, not just a narrow slice down the middle. Do yourself a favor now and reap the rewards of amazing footage later. 😉See below for an example of old home videos shot horizontally coming in handy later!
3. YouTube
You remember me launching our channel and then not posting a new video for months? Still on track to post once a quarter, it seems. This week I did start fangirling over Shawn Johnson and her husband’s channel, though, and I feel like I’m starting to understand what kind of YouTuber I want to be! If you haven’t seen any of her videos, or haven’t thought about her since the 2008 Olympic medal ceremony, give her a little love and check out her channel.
4. Germy Phones
A blogger I enjoy following, Regan from Blooming Nest, mentioned cleaning off her phone this week and how gross phones are in general. I agree. I consider mine a little germ brick and when I have my nanny girls or any kiddos around me I always notice how it gets even grimier with their little hands touching it and random drops in dirt or germy places. My point here is—how often do you wipe down and disinfect your phone? Think of all the places your phone goes and things it touches to then be held up to your face, laid on the kitchen counter, laying in bed with you, etc. Yuck. I’ve always cleaned my laptop screen with these wipes (I literally handed one to Ryan to clean his phone with 20 minutes ago), but these ones have the word “antiseptic” on the box and “anti-bacterial” in the product description so these may be a better choice!
5. Mother’s Day
If I go too far into depth here, I’ll start crying, but my mom is an incredible person and mother. I’ve been re-watching Gilmore Girls and I think I love it so much because I’ve always looked to my mom like Rory does to hers—as a role model that has her own amazing life and talents but would drop anything to be there for me. What a gift my mom gave me by showing me she could be so many things in her life and still be the best mother ever. I can’t imagine my world without her guiding me through every mini crises over the years. Mama, I love you.
Wishing you a great weekend celebrating moms, graduates, new babies, sunshine, and more. There’s always something or someone to celebrate if you think long enough. 🎉
