Design-wise, I am very into the idea of big, room-defining art right now. I’m talking beautifully matted photos, art prints blown up and framed, and textured pieces on walls. This week, I love the idea of an amazing RUG on a wall.
Earlier this year, I was inspired by an Instagram photo from Chris Loves Julia (of the same room shown above). They were working with a smallish space that had a single window—that had no light/view and was only an emergency path out. I thought their solution was so brilliant! They kept their design choices simple but incorporated a beautiful rug on the wall to cover the window and warm up the space. I was instantly all about this idea. You can find their tips for hanging a rug on the wall here!
Later, I saw a photo on Pinterest featuring a rug that looked similar to a rug I’ve loved for at least a year and think I love even more as a wall hanging. Its texture has always drawn me in, as well as the gorgeous attention-grabbing shape. This one would also be wonderful and is a little smaller and more affordable. The thickness and feel of this rug would be so amazing in a space that needs a statement piece. Even Walmart has great options that look similar to the one below!
Reasons to Use Them on Walls:
- Warmth. If I were designing any type of an industrial space, I would be trying to incorporate textiles in any way possible to up the warmth of the space. Using a rug to bring warmth to cold, concrete walls would be a great solution. It would also help to soak up sound and make the space less of an echo risk.
- Price for Size. Large art–in sculpture or print form–can be so crazy expensive! If you’re investing in a gorgeous piece for the wall, why would you not consider the idea of a large or fun-shaped rug to fill the same amount of space or even more? If you’re working with a room with really high ceilings, I think this is a particularly amazing idea to help draw the eye up the wall and extend the living space.
- Preservation. I visited Morocco when I studied abroad in college and vowed to go back when I could afford to buy a ton of stuff for my future home and ship it all home. In particular, I loved the lanterns, baskets, plates, and the RUGS. The gorgeous patterns and colors had me completely smitten. If I were to purchase one of those rugs that is such a special investment and memory for me, I’d want to protect it from harm as much as I could! From puppy accidents and kid spills and unnecessary grime…Putting a special rug (like an antique) on the wall is a great idea for preserving it while still fully enjoying its beauty.
Friends, what do you think of the idea of rugs as wall art? Now you know where I stand on the matter, but I’d love to hear whether or not YOU would put this idea into practice in your home or apartment. Let me know in the comments!
