I’ve always dreamt of having a little library in my home. There was a lady at church when I was little who had an in-home library and we went over to “check out” books from it once! I have never wanted to take it to that level, but I need a room with allllll the bookshelves someday to fill up with books of all kinds and outfit with a sliding ladder. 😍
What got me thinking about my library dream again was my new(ish)found love for pairing framed art pieces with built-ins full of books. I’m not sure when I first saw this done, but I’m all about the look.
Why I Love It
I love how putting art and books together lets framed pieces have their moment. It showcases framed work beautifully in a way that feels more thoughtful and intentional than being hung on an otherwise plain wall.
Art hung in front of a bunch of shelves breaks up the monotony of book spines. It adds dimension to what can become a flat or overlooked design choice—shelves full of books.
How I’d Incorporate This Look
At the forefront.
Mounting art to the front of a wall of identical bookshelves lets it steal the show. Pick one or more pieces to feature prominently this way. This exact look is what inspired this post and got me thinking about this idea and I can’t pinpoint when I first saw it! However, I think putting art front and center this way (see above) anchors a busy area for sure.
Amongst the books.
My family friend/life mentor/employer is so good at styling shelves, but I love how she’s done her office built-ins. She took a smaller framed piece of art and hung it directly on the back wall of her shelves instead of leaning it. When I first saw it, however long ago, the idea of nailing into a built-in had literally never occurred to me. I love how permanent and sophisticated it feels and looks there.
With a light in its own spot.
If I was building bookshelves and not working with existing built-ins, I would consider leaving a large cubby in the middle of the shelves for a favorite piece of art. I’d also wire it so incorporate an art light hanging right above it to make it stand out even more. I love the idea of a luxurious fireplace with a huge piece of art and an art light above it in the middle of a moody library, obviously, but just carving out a spot for a large piece of art makes me happy, too.
So, what do you think of this look? Which way would you use it? I’d love to hear if you’re drawn to any of my design ideas or example photos. Always looking to share more of what you love. 😘 Thanks for showing up!

I LOVE ART, especially lighted art. But never overdone…only one significant piece. Warms a space too.
Bookshelves create a fantastic cozy room….prefer more books that busy decor….
