In college and even as far back as middle school, I had some issues with handling stress. I would commit to so many things and had such insanely high standards for myself that I would work, work, work, work, work until I’d panic that there was no realistic way I could get everything done to the standard I wanted it to be at. That led to hyperventilating, crying, and stopping everything until I pull it together. It wasn’t good.
As an adult, I still try to do a lot, but I in no way try to do it all. You know that word, hygee? That Danish concept that every magazine and website has been referencing lately? That falls more in line with how I try to live my life outside of work now. Relishing moments with my pup, roomie, and family. And savoring the soft lighting in my living room with a big glass of red wine.
Four Ways to De-Stress:
1. Light a great candle and make yourself a cup of tea.
I’m a huge fan of the Anthropologie candle lineup. AND I hear there’s a candle sale coming soon! Stay tuned.
2. Take an early bath and snuggle into PJ’s for the evening.
Bath bombs or salts not necessary, but recommended.
3. Wash your face and put on a face mask.
If you’re ambitious, stick your feet in hot water while you wait for the mask to set and close your eyes.
4. Break out the adult coloring book.
There is something therapeutic about Twistable colored pencils and no requirements to stay inside the lines (in my opinion).
PRO TIP: Find a partner like my roomie who has dinner in progress and hands you a glass of red wine as he steers you toward the couch to relax until dinner is ready when you come home late from work. HOWEVER, I’m very aware he’s, like, one in a trillion. 🙂
How do you de-stress? I’m always looking for new ways to turn off my brain. Let me know in the comments!
