Our (fur) baby, Penny Love, is ONE today and I am feeling all the feelings! So, today I’ll tell the story of how we got Penny and my favorite parts of life with our beautiful (and unbelievably spoiled) Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Fall of 2016: I don’t even remember why I became obsessed with getting a corgi, but I bet it had something to do with the really cute Pinterest photos of corgi pups and their booties. I needed a corgi puppy—and also a place to live that allowed dogs.
Right after my offer was accepted to buy my home, I put a deposit down on an unborn puppy that ended up being born before I even moved in! Little Penny was born on Valentine’s Day and the second Ryan saw her picture she became our first major joint purchase. She has brought more joy to our lives than we could have ever predicted, so we are clearly smart investors.
I met her briefly when she was so tiny in March and we brought her home from southeast Iowa in early April. We have too many cute pictures of her puppyhood for this post, so look forward to a puppy post in the future!
Here are 12 things I love about Penny Love for every month of her first year:
- She is my little shadow and I love it. She tags along wherever I go, wants to go everywhere in the car with me, and even waits outside the bathroom door while I shower. She’s the perfect sidekick.
- She loves a good time. I have never known a dog that loves toys as much as Penny. She won’t touch them if we’re not home, but when we’re here she is obsessed with her giant collection of puppy toys and will squeak them over and over until you come play.
- She cuddles (but on her own time). Now that I gave in to her sleeping on the bed with us every night, Penny lays next to me and is my little snuggle buddy each night when I go to sleep. I will say that she’s also a bed hog, but at least she’s small(ish).
- She has gigantic corgi ears. We call them her satellites, but you can tell exactly how she feels based on what she does with them. That’s important since she has no tail to wag!
- She’s good with kiddos. She’s just recently been introduced to some littles and she is fascinated by them. It’s hilarious to watch her follow around toddlers and investigate their toys.
- She is so pretty. I think half of Ryan and I’s conversations, even after so long with her, are about how cute Penny is. Since she has been photographed nonstop since arriving at our home, she looks at the camera for me almost every time for glamour shots. If you don’t believe me, check out her Instagram, @pennylovethecorgi.
- She loves her yard. Watching her run around and play with herself in our yard is so entertaining. She’s also obsessed with the snow. I don’t understand her urge to just relax on a bed of freezing snow, but I’m happy if she’s happy!
- She’s confident. Little pup doesn’t shy away from laying in the middle of the floor or the bed spread eagle just enjoying life.
- She loves ice cubes just as much as I do. If Penny hears the ice machine in the kitchen, she sprints to it and waits for an ice cube to be given to her. Then you’ll find her chomping the ice in the other room.
- She is OK with all her nicknames! We call her Pork, Porker, Big Pork, Porky, Baby Girl, Bitty Girl, Small Girl, Peony, Pupper, and I’m sure there are more I can’t remember.
- She’s sensitive. She spent five days by Ryan’s side when he had a fever and does the same for me every time I get a migraine. Penny is the best little support system.
- She lets us carry her around like a human child. Penny is now over 36 pounds. She’s massive compared to the tiny pup we brought home. However, we still carry her around like an infant and she lets us.
Well, now that you’ve been introduced to my crazy dog lady side, we’ll go back to spoiling our girl with belly rubs and tug-of-war all night. Thanks for reading and hope you’re having a fabulous Valentine’s Day! And if you’re a dog person, please tell me about your pup—especially if your dog is a corgi. See you in the comments!
